Energy Management

Killam prioritizes the following key initiatives to drive our energy strategy and achieve our GHG emissions reduction goals:

1. Energy Systems and Performance - Killam enhances energy systems and performance through upgrading building envelopes, installing energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and optimizing HVAC systems.​ ​

2. Building Automation Systems (BAS) - Killam’s operations team utilizes remote building automation access to troubleshoot and diagnose comfort complaints or energy conservation issues. ​ ​

3. Submetering - Killam has implemented electrical submetering in new developments and acquisitions, encouraging tenants to reduce consumption as they pay directly for electricity.​ ​

4. Green Lease - To promote efficiency-minded practices among residents, Killam introduced a sustainability addendum to both renewals and new apartment leases.​ ​

5. Renewable Energy - Killam is dedicated to incorporating geothermal systems and solar panels where feasible.​ ​

6. Sustainable Transportation - Aligned with future transportation needs, Killam invests in urban core developments as well as integrating bicycle parking and electric vehicle charging stations across properties.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Killam is committed to supporting better environmental health, promoting long-term sustainability, and reducing our carbon footprint by establishing GHG emissions reduction targets and encouraging responsible resource use. To ensure accountability and to track progress, Killam conducts an annual GHG inventory that complies with The Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

Scope 1 includes all direct emissions generated by Killam, including building and fleet vehicle fuel consumption.

Scope 2 includes the steam and electricity paid for by Killam. ​

Scope 3 (Category 13) includes the electricity paid for by our tenants.

1. Low-Flow Appliances - Killam is actively reducing water consumption by installing efficient water fixtures.​ ​

2. Submetering - Killam has implemented a water submetering strategy across new developments and acquisitions, transferring responsibility for water consumption to tenants.​

3. Eco-Friendly Landscaping Practices -  Killam's landscaping approach involves selecting drought-resistant plant species, thereby reducing the need for supplementary watering.​

Better SortWe are dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts at our properties, including minimizing waste generation and managing disposal effectively. ​ ​

We implement the following strategies at our properties to effectively manage waste and minimize landfill disposal: ​ ​

1. Strategic Partnerships -  Killam collaborates with organizations to optimize waste disposal services across our properties, utilizing innovative technologies to minimize costs and environmental impact.​ ​

2. Waste Sorting Systems - Killam has implemented tri-sorter chutes in new developments where warranted, allowing residents to separate waste into three streams (garbage, recycling, and organics) using a simple keypad.​ ​

3. Resident Education - Killam’s waste management strategy prioritizes resident education and employs a proactive approach for effective waste sorting and disposal throughout the duration of the tenancy.
